soundweb.ie - Derrick Devine

With a new 4-track EP on the verge of release, SOUNDWEB caught up with this rising artist...

First of all, Derrick Devine is a man who likes to talk. A lot. Especially about music. Even the briefest conversation will leave you in no doubt that he takes this shit seriously, and that his unaffected demeanour hides a serious desire for you to listen to his music…

Formerly one-half of THE SCREWTAPE Bros. - the name taken from C.S. Lewis' tale of a Devil and his apprentice - the association came to a halt when the partners found their aspirations headed in different directions. There is an unmistakable creativity at work here - Derrick is also an accomplished Thespian (actor to you and me) - and one can tell that enormous thought goes into everything he does.

Derrick is now enjoying working with a loose affiliation of other musicians and has discovered a new found sense of liberty and flexibility - this has had the effect of adding a more rockier approach to some of the hitherto mellow tracks, you could say a-la Frames-style (a band that Derrick largely admires for bringing a much forgotten genre to public acclaim) whilst still giving top priority to the lyrical content. Other acts that have influenced Mr Devine are DEUS, Sparklehorse, Elliot Smith, Cork's own Boa Morte and Tom Waits.

So why are we sitting here chatting? Derrick is on the verge of releasing new EP due sometime early October although that may or may not happen as he insists on taking his own sweet time about these things and you and I shall just have to wait til he's good and ready!

"In my experience" says Derrick, "overnight sessions in TBMC aren't worth whole lot. Through the RubySessions, I met a guy with his own studio and we got chatting and discovered that we had much the same interest in music. He invited me to use the studio to record - I agreed on the basis that I could take my time - I feel a bit bad because it took me 2 months to get the first guitar track down!" On that basis, Derrick Devine may well feature on an upcoming Bulmers commercial - "Time - dedicated to you". Keep an ear out and watch this space - SOUNDWEB will let you know details of EP's release...
