The Lucky Caller No.9 is the long awaited first full length studio
album from Ian Whitty And The Exchange. The record was produced by top
Irish producer Ken McHugh (Dave Kitt, Autamata) and mastered by Dave
Collins in Los Angeles (Bruce Springsteen, Janes Addiction). It was
recorded by Ian Whitty And The Exchange between the legendary Connolly's
of Leap in West Cork and Adda/My Sanctuary studio's in the hills of
The singles from the album 'City Friend', 'Not On Your Side' and 'Houndstooth Shirt' have been enjoying much airplay on national, regional and college stations. Lush strings and brass dominate the indie pop arrangements of the new recordings and the up tempo nature of the songs marks an exciting progression from Ian's stripped back beginnings.
Since Ian's emergence, he has been a highly active figure in the thriving Cork scene, indeed members of The Exchange also share duties with Armoured Bear, Stanley Super 800 with members of FRED contributing to the album.
Since the release of The Lucky Caller No 9 Ian Whitty And The Exchange were invited to perform at many of the Summers Indie festivals, The Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis and have shared the stage with many of the luminaries of the Irish and International scene including Florence And The Machine, The Magic Numbers, Lisa Hannigan, The Waterboys, The Frames and Roderigo y Gabriella to name but a few.
Ian is a songwriter who firmly believes in craft and in always placing substance over style. He is most often praised for his distinctive vocal delivery and lyricism that manages to be urgent, humorous and razor sharp without ever sacrificing the storytelling that underpins his songs. The Energy and urgency brought by the Exchange both live and on record pulls the songs into a new league.
Ian Whitty and The Exchange were winners of the Hot Press/Tisch video competition 2008 and had a video made for 'Not On Your Side'. The video is currently up for viewing on www.hotpress.com . Singles Houndstooth Shirt And City Friend were selected for recent IMRO and Hot Press Compilations.
Ian Whitty And The Exchange were also amongst the first acts to be selected by Alison Curtis of Today FM in her Ireland Rocks section where she gives the thumbs up to the cream of up and coming Irish Acts.
Ian Whitty is a Killarney based singer-songwriter who has been building up a steady following here in Ireland where he has been playing nationwide for over three years now.
Ian's songs are characterised by a lyrically engaging and melodic contemporary folk sound that has led him to be identified as a strong new voice in Irish song writing. Last year he completed his first tour of America's East Coast. In recent times he has performed alongside such acclaimed acts such as The Frames, Mundy, David Kitt and Damien Rice to name but a few.
Ian is currently working on his debut record which is due for release this Autumn.
