"Mundy was a man on the verge of something spectacular, Sony would at one time have told you he was the next Bob Dylan or Jeff Buckley; How things change. Since the release of this superb album, Sony decided that they knew what was best for young Mundy, and attempted to dictate his future songwriting. To his credit Mundy has resisted, resulting in a split from Sony but this superb album that has sold now over 50,000 copies will remain his for ever, something to talk about to his kin and to promote memories of supporting Neil Young and Stereophonics - all a result of the international acclaim received for this superb album.
Lyrically this album excels, tracks such as life's a cinch with its charming nursery rhyme intertextuality and the beautiful 'Gin & Tonic Sky' start the ball rolling until it crashes straight into commercial favourite 'to you I bestow' - coming out the other side at double speed.
It is no surprise that in April of 2002 Mundy finally completed his follow-up showing Sony and the music industry that there really is more to music than money.
This album is superb, a charming record that is well worth purchasing and holding onto until the day comes, and I'm sure it will, that Mundy's name is up there with Buckley et al.
Brilliant."

"The Live CD album is
positively bursting with his greatest hits whilst the DVD features a
full length concert and has extras like a video, outtakes and band
interviews. The CD/DVD set encompasses Mundy's 10-year, three-album
career to date, and highlights his growth as a songwriter, from the raw
exuberance of To You I Bestow to the timeless quality of Raining Down
Arrows. Recorded at a rammed Vicar Street in October 2005, it captures
the Birr singer slaying a packed house with a set culled from his three
studio albums to date (Jellylegs, 24 Star Hotel, Raining Down Arrows).
Visually and aurally, Live & Confusion is the perfect snapshot of one of
Irelands finest performers at the peak of his powers. Backed by an
incredible band who are as tight as the proverbial camels posterior in a
sandstorm, the man Christened Edmond Enright powers his way through his
best-known and most loved material, from the emotionally taut,
gut-wrenchingly delicate Linchpin, to the raucous singalong of Mexico,
to the driving rock of Sound Of Keys. The song that really started the
emotional rollercoaster on its journey was To You I Bestow which revs it
up while the blistering version of Gin & Tonic Sky included here still
sounds as powerful as ever after all these years. And no live Mundy
album would be complete without the tune that has single-handedly
soundtracked summer in Ireland over the last number of years, the mighty
July. Slipped in right at the end is Steve Earles Galway Girl where hes
joined by Sharon Shannon who played on the original version on Earles
Transcendental Blues album. Since he first emerged from the Midlands,
guitar in hand, in 1996 as a fresh-faced 20-year-old, Mundy has grown to
become one of Irelands favourite songwriters and one of the most
accomplished live performers anywhere in Europe. His live set ebbs and
swells with raw feeling, unforgettable choruses and, of course, raw rock
n roll, all perfectly encapsulated on Live & Confusion." |
