Carol Keogh: "The aim of this project is to raise funds to record my debut solo album, Mongrel City. I’ve been writing and performing for many years with bands like The Plague Monkeys and The Tycho Brahe. Now it’s time for me to write my own name on the wall and I’m hoping you’ll hold my hand while I do it."

From the Tychonaut mailing list: Tychonaut exclusive mp3s, News + Cork Gig this Saturday

Upcoming gigs:

News: Sorry about the radio silence. We have been writing-demoing the next Tychonaut album which is due out some time in 2006. We have also begun to start work again on the 'Low Babies' archive album which is back on track. (2 mp3s can be found further down this email)

Del 9 made a very nice video for 'your house from mine' which will be released in the UK in the next few months with our cover of Depeche Mode's 'world in my eyes' as a b-side. We will put the video up on the site around the same time.

All Tychonaut releases available from

"Jigsaw" -
"Alice" -

Above are 2 tracks from the Tychonaut/Low Babies album 'Lion's Teeth'.

For those who are new to the mailing list, Carol, Donal and Diarmuid all worked together as 'Low Babies' 11 years ago when we were, well... babies back in 1994. Donal and Carol went on to form The Plague Monkeys. Then all 3 came back together.

This 'Tychonaut/Low Babies' album will contain our first steps into the world of song writing and recording.

"Reducing noise, the hiss, the atmosphere ..."

All tracks are recorded a 4-track tape recorder by either Diarmuid or Donal, which explains the hiss. The running order:

Hot Press: The Tycho Brahe have changed their name, sealed a European distribution deal and announced a series of live gigs across Ireland

Dublin's Tycho Brahe, sorry Tychonaut, have done it again.

Following the success of their albums, This is and Love Life, and their two Meteor nominations, Carol & co. have now landed a European and UK deal. This means that their two albums will soon be commercially available across Europe, with another in the pipeline for 2005.

But if that wasn’t enough excitement for one year, they’ve also gone and changed their name. To Tychonaut. Explaining their reasons behind this decision, the band have said, "We like the new one more!"

Apparently, it goes something like this:

Q: What do you call an American space man?
A: An Astronaut

Q: What do you call an Russian space man?
A: A Cosmonaut

Q: What do you call a Chinese space man?
A: A Tychonaut

Could it be that the band have finally found out the true story behind their namesake, Tycho Brahe? The 16th century Danish astronomer died a most embarrassing death following a banquet he attended at the Prague palace of the Bohemian Count of Rosenberg.

Food poisoning it was not. Brahe, thinking it "discourteous" to answer the call of nature during the course of the feast, sat at the table until his bladder burst and he died several days later.

Whatever, you can see the ex-Brahe Chinese spacemen live at the following venues this summer:

Last year's successful first series, which featured The Frames, Josh Ritter, Damien Rice, Damien Dempsey, Mundy and Mark Geary, also topped the charts with the 'Other Voices' album.

This prompted a return to Dingle to record a second run of programmes, hosted by Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club and featuring artists such as David Kitt, Simple Kid and Turn.
The show will be broadcast from Tuesday 10 February on RTÉ Network 2.

January 9 2004

On Wednesday January 28th, Vicar St will host a concert to mark the Dublin music community’s response to the earthquake which devastated the Iranian city of Bam on St. Stephen’s Day, killing over 40,000 people.

The night will include solo performances from Lisa Hannigan, Paul
Noonan (Bell X1), Steve and Joe Wall, cellist Vyvienne Long, the Tycho Brahe, Shakram Music and Dance Company and other special guests including Damien Rice (now confirmed).

All proceeds from the gig will go to support the work of Belfast-based “Save the Children” which has a special project working with children who have been left homeless or orphaned by the disaster. It is estimated that over 80% of the city was destroyed in the earthquake and besides the devastating loss of life, caring for the survivors is a major concern with no proper buildings, food supplies or sanitation. Tens of thousands of people are now living in tents or makeshift dwellings, enduring the sub-zero temperatures of an Iranian winter.

The night is being organised by Tanja Raab and Damien Rice drummer, Tomo who were drawn to the plight of the citizens of Bam.

“One thing that best exemplifies the plight of the children of Bam is the realisation that thousands of children have been orphaned by the disaster” said Tanja. “To make matters worse, Bam’s only orphanage collapsed in the quake, killing 54 of the 60 children sleeping inside,” said Tomo.

Tickets for the gig will go on sale Tuesday the 13th from Road Records, Sound Cellar, City Disk, Claddagh Records and Ticketmaster outlets nationwide, priced at €28.

New web-site design also launched.

"Exactly one year after the release of their debut album, The Tycho Brahe go one better with the release their second album by making it a double studio album entitled Love Life, with the first disc entitled 'Love' and the second 'Life'. The idea for a double album wasn't originally planned but when the group found themselves with plethora of strong songs that seemed to belong with each other and when a totally unintentional twin theme became apparent, Love Life was born. The Tycho Brahe are made up of Donal O' Mahony, Diarmuid Mac Diarmada and Carol Keogh. Their endless eclecticism and bottomless supply of musical ideas are enhanced by Carol Keogh's enchanting voice and highly poetic use of language that renders their songs heart-stoppingly sublime. The band launch their sophomore album on Friday 26th September at Whelan's with more Irish dates to follow from 1st November."

September 2003

The Tycho's new double album titled "Love Life" is available September 19 online and from September 26 nationwide. The band have put some sample sounds online.

August 21 2003

Hot Press: "The Tycho Brahe treat us to a full frontal with the release their voluptuous double CD, Love Life

They stand to be corrected, but The Tycho Brahe make what they believe to be Irish music history on September 26 with the release of Love Life.

"As far as we know, it's the first double studio album by an Irish band ever," says singer Carol Keogh.

We've racked our brains and, apart from Rattle & Hum which was mostly a studio affair, can't think of anyone who's done it before either.

Hard-working types, they've also organised a lengthy tour which takes in Whelan's, Dublin (September 26); The King's, Waterford (October 25); DeBarra's, Clonakilty (November 13); The Lobby, Cork (14 TBC); Stables, Mullingar (15); Warwick, Galway (27); and Spirit Store, Dundalk (29).

The band will also be making four new songs available for download on their website,, over the next four weeks."
